Holiday Travel Tips

Are you planning to travel during the holidays? If so, you're not alone!  Almost half of us (47%) intend to spend the holidays away from home this year, driving and flying to see family and enjoy vacations. With many more people on the roads and in the air, it's certain to be a busy time. But don't worry! To help make your trip smooth and stress-free, we put together some tips that will help you get through holiday travel without incident.

Traveling by Air?

About half of travelers this year will get to their destinations by air, so airports are sure to be bustling.

Check-in early if possible. This will give you more time to go through security and relax ahead of your flight with fewer crowds at the airport. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you always want to be prepared! Having extra time will give you the wiggle room to get where you need to be without rushing or extra stress.

Pack Light

Packing light is the easiest way to save money while traveling. Checked bags can cost up to $100 extra on some airlines, so packing light is essential if you want to avoid that expense. Plus, carrying your own luggage makes for less waiting around at airport terminals!

Book Rental Cars Now

With so many people traveling, you'll want to make sure your rental car is ready and waiting when you get to your destination. Book ahead online if you can so you won't have to wait when you get there!

Maximize Your Carry On

Your carry on bag is your best friend. Bring necessary items like airplane-ready food, medications and reading material in your bag if there are delays. Important gifts and an extra change of clothes is also important, just in case your luggage doesn't make it at the same time you do.

Bring Unwrapped Gifts ...Or Ship Ahead!

If you're traveling with gifts, leave them unwrapped. When inspecting bags and luggage,  TSA may unwrap gifts  if they need to inspect your bag, so it's best to wrap presents later after you arrive. You could also consider shipping gifts ahead of time to avoid the hassle altogether.

Traveling By Car?

With so many people on the roads this holiday, it's best to take it slow and prepare for drives to take a little longer than expected. As long as you make it from point A to point B safely, that's what matters most.

Consider leaving early or late in the day to avoid heavy traffic around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Comfy seats, extra water and snacks, and plenty of entertainment are a must if you run into delays or unexpected road trouble.

Tune Up Your Vehicle

Driving in winter can be just as stressful as flying. With potential bad weather and all the extra drivers on the road, you'll want to be prepared to make the drive as easy as possible. Get a quick tune-up before you hit the road so you know your vehicle is in good working order to manage the drive. And if you have roadside assistance or AAA, keep those numbers handy just in case you need to use them!

Get Your Apps Ready!

The best thing about driving in the 21st century? All the apps! From planning the best routes and places to get gas, to weather alerts and entertainment, there are so many apps to keep your family going strong the whole trip long! Download books, movies, playlists, and travel apps now so you can be prepared and entertained on the road without worrying about data.

Wrap Gifts Carefully

Squashed bows, crumpled boxes, torn paper... oh my! If you're wrapping gifts before you leave, think about how they will fit in the car with all your extra luggage. The last thing you'll want to do is re-wrap everything or give damaged presents. Wrap and pack carefully to keep your gifts beautiful – or wait until you get there to put on the finishing touches.

Safety Above All Else

Nothing ruins a holiday like an accident. Driving safely and defensively is the most important part of getting there, even if it takes a little extra time. Accept that it's the busiest time of the year and one of the most stressful to drive. Being well-rested, patient, and careful on your trip will help you get there in one piece so you can all enjoy the holidays together.
